In a time when it seems hard to be original, the best route to originality seems to be: keep your heart open and use what tools you can to try to see what’s it telling you. Asher Craw seems to be on this path. Zebadiah is a strange, quiet work, a personal myth about losing one’s soul, and trying to stay connected to the ones you love. He has studied at the IPRC in Portland, Oregon and has recently been awarded something or other at that city’s Gridlords event (sorry- we’re on the East Coast so transmissions are hazy.) On top of that, his ancillary work, Dream Guide and Take a Picture demonstrate a desire to experiment, and tune the dials of his existence until something comes into focus. Look for issues two and three, out soon.”

-
SAW Micro Grant Awardees announced

Hey everyone! A lot of you may have heard about this already, but DOMINO is losing our headquarters, 282 Broadway/Cartoon House (also the place that I and many other people in the arts/comics community live out of). It’s a sad situation—-so much work has been made in this apartment, and many artists/cartoonists/people-involved-in-art have called it their home over the last decade, including Lizz Hickey, Jon Vermilyea, Jesse McManus, Clara Bessijelle, Bald Eagles/Victor Cayro, Christopher Ortiz, Becca Kacanda, Jeff Ladoceur, Dave Nuss, Bill Kartalopoulos, Aidan Koch and myself, Austin English. The apartment has also been a ‘safe-house’ for cartoonists and artists visiting New York—-it would be hard to list all the people who have crashed here for a day or a week or months while working on their art.

The space also serves as the headquarters for 3 small publishers—-DOMINO, Rebus Books and Revival House. For small businesses like ours, the move will be involved and cut into our already razor-thin-margins operations. Make no mistake, we will survive and continue to thrive after this move! BUT—-DOMINO is asking for your help today by asking for one simple thing: if you’ve been considering ordering any of our books——especially the 6 books we publish, DARK TOMATO, SPIDER MONKEY, FACE MAN, DIFFICULT LOVES, SPACE BASKET or TUSEN HJARTAN STARK—-now would be a wonderful time for you to go ahead and buy them! We offer all six books together for $26 (you get TUSEN for free, plus pay no shipping). But, really, any order today helps us out with this move and lightens our load (less books, less to move)!

Thanks you guys! Link to the store below—-check it out and feel free to share this!

http://dominobooks.org/store.html

if you can purchase something from Domino Books or can at least reblog this. They are an incredible selfpublishing energy!

The first time I met Austin I got mad at him for eating my carrots…but he is a real sweetheart and could really use your help. Plus his books are FANTASTIC.

Austin’s a good guy and you probably need these books.

"When it comes to art, isn’t it inconsequential whether the person who created a particular work is..."

“
When it comes to art, isn’t it inconsequential whether the person who created a particular work is female or male? Yet all is not equal in the art world. For evidence of this, one need only look at the results of art auctions. For years, only one woman has ranked among the top sellers internationally — American artist Cindy Sherman.

In other words, in a milieu that has always considered itself nonconformist, unconventional, even radical and certainly progressive — a world in which feminism is part of the general discourse — women seem to be at a distinct disadvantage.

…

Gender inequality in the art world is not just a subjective impression. Female artists’ works are displayed considerably less often — and art needs an audience, a chance to prove itself.
”

- “The Gallery’s Glass Ceiling: Sexism Persists in Art World,” Ulrike Knöfel (via scarymansion)

Fun activity: every time you see a group art show or anthology, compare the number of men against the number of women who contributed. If they’re equal, check to see whether the promotional material is pink or includes references to the sexuality of the contributors.

Bonus round: try not to think about suicide.

"There are times… when the pain is so unbelievable that the literally unbelievable makes as..."

“There are times… when the pain is so unbelievable that the literally unbelievable makes as much sense as anything else in that moment.
I recently received my early edition of Asher Craw’s Zebadiah part 2. I knew in advance where the story was going, and a little of its contents, as Asher & I had discussed it & he has been generous enough to share it with me as it forms. Even knowing what was to come and having my mind feel overwhelmed in anticipation, could not numb the utter love, wonder, sadness, and lust for life that this story instills in me! Asher is a powerful storyteller and he is using it for good & for a revolutionary purpose that doesn’t hit you in a way that deters from its magic as just a story alone. I’ll leave its harmony to your own discovery between the pages. This new issue makes it more apparent that each of these parts can stand on their own as well as being part of the whole, which is something you rarely see in the world of comics.

Asher Craw will be have copies of ZEBADIAH II at my table at Stumptown Comics Fest this month. Moral: there exist obsessive ideas, they are never personal; books talk among themselves, and any true detection should prove that we are the guilty party.
”

- Umberto Eco, PostScript to the Name of the Rose
